Parquet Courts frontman presents his new single/visualizer, ‘David’s Dead,’ from Several Songs About Fire, his highly anticipated new album out this Friday on Rough Trade. On ‘David’s Dead’ — a song memorializing his long time friend and neighbour David Lester, who was homeless and would ring his door for conversation late at night — Savage spurns the sepulchral or elegiac. Instead, the song travels on a poppy, conversational refrain and the joyous half-life of a vibraphone, a better tribute to someone who Savage remembers as having little restraint, and a better reminder that death is made of life.

From the new album MY BACK WAS A BRIDGE FOR YOUR TO CROSS. where a mandate of care protects her, and she is free to express joy, wonderment and relief. The video asks whether such a society is within reach.

The song “SCAPEGOAT”, cowritten with producer Jimmy Hogarth, articulates the crisis experienced by those caught in cycles of persecution, lyrically interweaving the voice of a perpetrator with an omniscient perspective, perhaps of Nature Herself, as She watches on, holding empathic space for the underlying subject of assault.

“You’re so killable… disappear-able. / This one we need not protect / This one’s a freebie for our guns/ Take this one to a place/You’d better have your way / Take all of my hate into your body.” ANOHNI refers alternately to victims of sexual assault, kidnapping, murder, gun violence, and bullying, illuminating the reality that certain human bodies in our societies are designated as expendable.

In the final stanza, ANOHNI states “It doesn’t matter who you are, or where you come from / It doesn’t matter what you’ve got to give, or why you want to live / You’re my scapegoat / It’s not personal.” By stating “It’s not personal,” ANOHNI separates the dignity and the interior lives of scapegoated individuals from the violence they endure.

Guiding us into this new world, sophie shares lead single ‘forever mine’ that draws inspiration from the anime trope “yandere” which is derived from the Japanese words yanderu; meaning insane or sick, and deredere, meaning affectionate or loving.
