Tāmaki Makaurau-based LOLA returns | Listen to new song 'Faith'
Following her lucid trip-hop single ‘Under’, Tāmaki Makaurau-based producer and vocalist Lola returns with ‘Faith’, a song that grapples with the fleeting nature of spirituality. Set against a backdrop of layered percussion, Spanish guitar, and cinematic stillness, ‘Faith’ questions the things we hold onto—whether in ourselves, in others, or in something greater—and the ease with which they can slip away. Self-produced and written by Lola, she describes ‘Faith’ as: “A cyclical take on being connected to energy that feels bigger than just the day-to-day. But that connection is fleeting; life inevitably pulls you back, grounding you in reality. The song tries to capture that push and pull—the cycle of losing it, searching for it, and finding it again, only for it to slip away once more.”

DARKSIDE release new album Nothing | Pick it up from your favourite record store today
Out now via Matador Records, Nothing is the third album by DARKSIDE and the first that the group – founded by Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington – have completed as a trio with new drummer Tlacael Esparza. Nothing is nine transmissions of negative space, telepathic seance, and spectral improvisation. Nothing begins with ‘Slau,’ an atmospheric canvas of bass-heavy dub juxtaposed with slashing electro-clash vocals. The title of the finale, the sun-damaged and cosmically fuzzy ‘Sin El Sol No Hay Nada,’ harkens back to the original spirit of creation. The genesis of life itself. And in the music, there is the unstinting sense of excitement and open-endedness – where there are no answers, merely generosity of spirit and the desire to break free from the enclosed feedback loop. It’s truly something.

The band has also shared a new live session, The Agadez Folders: Live at Mdou’s House. The 20-minute performance features three songs – ‘Takoba,’ ‘Modern Slaves,’ and ‘Funeral For Justice’ – filmed last year at the guitarist’s home in Niger. “This was one of the first sessions we recorded on that Agadez trip,” explains bassist / producer, Mikey Coltun. “We wanted it to feel relaxed and comfortable, so, as we all gathered, Mdou’s house felt like the perfect place to film acoustic renditions of the ‘Funeral For Justice’ songs. Much like any session we’ve filmed in Niger, friends would stop by and join in, often clapping along and singing.”

HORSEGIRL release track-by-track for Phonetics On and On | Watch it!
HORSEGIRL release video track-by-track for Phonetics On and On. Horsegirl — the New York-via-Chicago trio of best friends Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece — released their sophomore album, Phonetics On and On, earlier this month via Matador. Produced by Cate Le Bon and recorded at The Loft in Chicago, Horsegirl’s original and sonic home, Phonetics On and On explores the limits of the trio configuration— what if instead of filling out songs with distortion, they utilized the expanse that the three of them didn’t occupy? This question is the guiding force behind the record, and the songs are a testament to experimenting with space and texture while maintaining a pop song at the core. It’s an album to dance to, as Reece’s dancing drum melodies and Lowenstein’s bright guitar leads direct your attention to the band’s chemistry and mastery of form.
TOM WAITS performs + reads poetry in new documentary | Watch 'The Last Ride'
Created by the Italian public television channel RAI3, ‘The Human Factor’ is a series of eight 46-minute investigative journalism episodes that reveal how human rights are violated by authoritarian regimes, autocracies or even within democratic nations, where the most vulnerable and the minorities often face oppression. Ultima Fermata – ‘The Last Ride’ – is the final episode in the eight-part series and an immersive journey among the “last” on earth: U.S. citizens that experience homelessness who are victims of a system without safety nets and forced to live in extremely marginalized conditions. In ‘The Last Ride’, their stories are accompanied by the unmistakable voice of Tom Waits. With performances on acoustic guitar and piano as well as reading from his poem Seeds On Hard Ground, Waits provides a throughline to the landscape of faces and stories portrayed in the documentary.
